Archinoetics' brain imaging systems are being applied as an assistive technology to help those with Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that can have devestating effects, leaving a person fully paralyzed and unable to speak or communicate in any way (a state known as "locked-in"). However, the person's cognitive capabilities and senses (vision, hearing, etc.) remain fully intact. We are working with the ALS Association to develop brain-computer interfaces to allow these people to communicate again, using only their brain signals. Additionally, we also hope that our research will lead to a greater understanding and awareness of this disease. |
