Environmental Monitoring

Project Niu

Archinoetics received funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to implement an interactive educational project in which students study the effects of local actions on the watershed. Students will learn about the use of technology for environmental monitoring and sensing. This will be accomplished through tracking a custom, autonomous, GPS-tracked, ocean-going sensor device (Niu) equipped with a satellite modem for data upload. Students will also take part in several 'Meaningful Outdoor Experiences' that help them build a sense of pride in their environment and allow experiential learning opportunities.

The name "Niu" has a dual-meaning for this project: first, it is the Hawaiian word for "coconut", and second it stands for "Nature Imparts Understanding". The reference to a coconut was chosen for a few reasons:

  • Coconuts are often found floating in the ocean (much like the Niu sensor device will)
  • Coconuts were of high importance to the native Hawaiians and are still used throughout the Pacific Islands.
  • The Hawaiian word "niu" strengthens the connection to Hawaii for inspiring pride in this project in local school children.
